Ode to the 1930’s Blocks #23-25

June 8, 2016 by Sue Leave a Comment

May found us working on more 6″x6″ blocks. I had a dental emergency and couldn’t attend one week at the last minute, so Terry and ShaRee spent the day cutting kits for these three blocks and then we sewed them up on subsequent weeks. It’s so nice to have supportive quilting buddies! They did a great job picking out fabrics.

Block #23 Double X was an easy block that came together quickly and straight. Hooray for those! A little bit of fussy-cutting on the center squares got us each a pop of red in the flowers. We were able to spend the rest of that sewing day cutting fabric for our other project, the America the Beautiful quilts. We like it when we can sew something already cut out and then prep for the future by cutting new blocks. It makes the cutting less tedious because we got to sew.

What’s In A Name? 2016 wrap-up

What's In A Name 2016 logoWhat’s In A Name? 2016

The ninth annual What’s In A Name challenge is once again hosted by The Worm Hole. I began the fun in 2009 so I couldn’t pass up the chance to play again. I read all the books early except an item of furniture, which I had a hard time finding on my TBR shelves. I was searching for another book when I found “The Piano Teacher” on the row behind some others, pulled it out and finished up this challenge in the first half of the year. Links to my reviews are found on the challenge website under each category.

The rules are simple-Read one book from each of the following categories:

A country: A Passage to India, E.M. Forster
An item of clothing: The Kashmir Shawl, Rosie Thomas
An item of furniture: The Piano Teacher, Janice Y.K. Lee
A profession: The Beekeeper’s Apprentice (Mary Russell #1), Laurie R. King
A month of the year: The Fifth of March: A Story of the Boston Massacre, Ann Rinaldi
A title with the word ‘tree’ in it: The Darling Dahlias and the Cucumber Tree (The Darling Dahlias #1), Susan Wittig Albert

America the Beautiful-trees, schools, Bounty & fences

May 24, 2016 by Sue Leave a Comment

I am late posting these blocks although we have been working steadily away at our project. We have been cutting kits and then sewing, so sometimes it takes a while before blocks actually get put together, but we are a little over halfway done now. We worked on the Schoolhouse block together, then did the bell applique as homework. It took a while for us to remember to bring the blocks back for photos, so we finished these a couple months ago. It lives in the upper left directly under the Flag block. We each chose different fabrics for the barns and adjoining tree, and even though they are different, they are all very cute! Don’t you want to attend one of these little schoolhouses?

Ode to the 1930’s Blocks #20-22

May 13, 2016 by Sue Leave a Comment

These are the first of the 6″x6″ blocks and a little variation in seam allowance on these small ones makes a big difference when they are all sewn together. We made Card Tricks on a day in late February then chose fabric and made kits for Dutchman’s Puzzle and Grandmother’s Choice. We sewed these up in April after everyone returned from being out of town on different weeks in March. [Read more…] about Ode to the 1930’s Blocks #20-22
