What’s in a Name 2020 wrap-up

I began this challenge in 2009 and have loved doing it every year. It’s fun to find books in my stacks or on audio from the library to fill the categories. Thanks to Andrea at Carolina Book Nook for hosting. The rules are simple: Read one book in each category. I’ve finished up this challenge and here are my books for 2020. I liked them all, even though they were a varied lot.

  • An ampersand – &:  Smoke & Summons, Charlie N. Holmberg
  • An antonym: Magic Bitter, Magic Sweet, Charlie N. Holmberg
  • 4 letters or less: Rook, Sharon Cameron
  • A given/first name: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, J.K. Rowling
  • Reference to children: The Snow Child, Eowyn Ivey
  • One of the 4 natural elements – water, air, fire, earth: The Ghost Fields (Ruth Galloway #7), Elly Griffiths

Red for Sept RSC2020

Red for September! I have the red crumb blocks already done for the Irish Chain & there aren’t any red blocks in the Alison Glass kit, so I didn’t have as much red to do. These Rainbow Stairsteps are based on a layout by Julie and this is block #9 since I’ve done one/month. That’s all the blocks I need to do her layout, so it’s time to lay it out & make some black blocks to fill in the edges.

Tumbling Strings is inspired by a selvage quilt by Cathy and I made the red row then sewed it to the finished pink & orange rows from previous months. This top only needs yellow, brown, & black rows.

Here are two more Bonnie Hunter Sandcastle blocks in red. This is my current L&E project but I’ve been doing them in the monthly color lately.

I made 4 red checkerboard blocks and since this was a mid-year addition to my projects, it’s going to finish up sometime next year.

August RSC2020 color=purple

So here’s all my purple August work. There turned out to be lots of purple sewing after the lean July blue month. Rainbow Stairsteps based on a layout by Julie. This project is zipping along with 8 blocks done now. So fun.

Here are the blue & purple blocks for the Alison Glass Sun Print 2016 project. Last month I didn’t make the blue because I thought there weren’t any in the kit & never got the box out, so when I went for the purples this month I was surprised to find blue. (eyeroll) So lots done this month.

Tumbling Strings is inspired by a selvage quilt by Cathy and got a purple row added to some of the rows already finished.

We got to a month that needed crazy patch blocks! These will be cut into small blocks & used to create End of the Rainbow from Melissa Corry’s Irish Chain Quilts book.

Here are two more Bonnie Hunter Sandcastle blocks in purple. This is my current L&E project. I have the string sections & 4-patches made, so I’m putting them together as L&E’s.

I made 6 of the checkerboard blocks for my low priority project that will drift into 2021. It wasn’t in my original plan so I’m fine with that. One day I’ll just decide I want to focus on it & it will get done.

July RSC2020 is more blue

July 24, 2020 by Sue 1 Comment

I got all the blue done that I needed on this year’s projects during the previous two months of blue shades, so felt like there was nothing for me to do this month to move my current projects forward. What to do? I decided to move ahead on Bonnie Hunter’s Sand Castle blocks. I had all the string blocks sewn together a few months ago but haven’t cut the centers, so I made all the 4-patches, then cut some blue centers and put together four blocks. I like ’em!

June RSC2020 is pink

I did the pink blocks for the Alison Glass Sun Print 2016 project. Economy blocks are a little tedious to put together so doing a few each month makes this project fun each month when I come back to it.

Rainbow Stairsteps based on a layout by Julie. This project gets more & more exciting with each color I finish. I can’t wait to get to the end of the year & start assembling it.

Tumbling Strings is inspired by a selvage quilt by Cathy and got a fun pink row, plus I made 3 more blocks for the checkerboard project that’s a low priority.

Since I finished the Diamond Strings, I got distracted by an Arrowhead Puzzle quilt I saw here. I fell in love with it & downloaded the pattern from her link. It’s all 2.5″ squares & I have piles of them already cut in all colors, so it became my L&E project. I quickly caught up with the earlier colors from the year & now here are the pinks. They are accumulating on my design wall & I predict it will be done long before the end of the year! 🙂

So that’s my June work for RSC, the month is only half over & I’m on to other projects until the July color announcement. Happy sewing!
