I’m recovering from thumb surgery in September. I was unable to sew for awhile, but then I found that I could sew string blocks. I was able to lay a string on the paper, then trim the string with scissors instead of the rotary cutter as usual. I made blocks for Bonnie Hunter’s Stardust, which is made up entirely of string blocks. There are blues, low volumes, & half/half. So I made hundreds of blocks & this week I finished. I can’t trim them yet, but they are all made. It felt good to be able to sew something. Did I make a dent in my scraps? Yes to the blues, but not to the LV’s. I have two bins of those.

Bonnie Hunter’s Stardust pattern is a great use of your strippy scraps, Sue! Glad to hear that you have recovered enough to be able to sew all the blocks needed for your quilt. Happy trimming once you get the go ahead for the squaring up!
Thumb surgery sounds painful, wishing you a speedy recovery.
It’s coming along! A compression glove under my splint has helped the swelling go down & thus, the pain has lessened. Yay!
Thumb surgery doesn’t seem good, but I’m glad you are able to find a way to sew and trim the blocks. It’s a beautiful quilt pattern. Speedy recovery!
I’m glad you figured out something you could sew! Sewing therapy makes all the difference to recovery! String blocks are fun – I’ll enjoy seeing yours turn into the quilt design.
