istock-books

Another reading year has come to an end and here’s the tally for the year. I got back to a more normal amount of books for me this year, despite all the things that happened. Part of that was due to lots of audio books while sewing & kindle books while exercising.

Books read: 161
Pages read: 55,269
Of the books read:
Non-fiction: 15
New-to-me authors: 44
Continuing series books: 105
Re-reads: 26
Audio-books: 78
Various book club reads: 8
Challenges completed: 8 of 8
Ongoing tally of Newbery winners: 81 of 98
5 star ratings by me: 31

2018: 122 books: 41,700 pages; 10 non-fiction; 25 new-to-me authors; 56 series; 23 re-reads; 52 audio-books; 9 of 9 challenges completed; 77 of 97 Newbery winners

I had a great year with this challenge. Thanks to Julie of SmilingShelves for hosting. I joined at the lowest level: L’Engle: 15 – 29 points, and each book you read is worth points.

I’ve done this challenge other years and made this same level, but this year I went up two levels and achieved the Avi: 45 – 59 points by reading a total of 47 points!

This will be my seventh year for this challenge and I continue to enjoy it as hosted by Bev at My Reader’s Block so it made the list for this year. I finished earlier in the year and, like every year, I think I’ll struggle, but I just manage to find books that work. Rules: Read nine books in the following categories during 2019. The word needs to be in the title or on the cover.

  1. Blue: A Beautiful Blue Death (Charles Lenox #1), Charles Finch
  2. Red: American Rose: A Nation Laid Bare: The Life and Times of Gypsy Rose Lee, Karen Abbott
  3. Yellow: The Golden Tresses of the Dead (Flavia de Luce #10), Alan Bradley
  4. Green: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, Fannie Flagg
  5. Brown: The Planet of Junior Brown, Virginia Hamilton
  6. Black: The Black Moon (Poldark Saga #5), Winston Graham
  7. White: Empire of Ivory  (Temeraire #4), Naomi Novik
  8. Any other color: The Darling Dahlias and the Silver Dollar Bush (Darling Dahlias #5), Susan Wittig Albert
  9. A word that implies color: A Long Shadow (Inspector Rutledge #8), Charles Todd

2020 Finishing the Series

December 23, 2019 by Sue Leave a Comment

This challenge is hosted by Celebrity Readers and is focused on finally finishing those series that we’ve started but not yet completed. Series can be already completed as well as still ongoing.  For ongoing series, the goal is to catch up to the most recent book published by the end of 2020.

They don’t care if we have only 1 book or 10 books to read in order to finish a series, as long as we’ve started the series before 2020 (i.e. read at least one book in the series), it counts.  Re-reads are not required.

I am going for the lowest level and planning to complete the following series:

Ophelia & Abby Mysteries by Shirley Damsgaard

Someday Quilts Mysteries by Clare O’Donohue

Monthly Motif Reading Challenge 2020

December 17, 2019 by Sue Leave a Comment

I’ve done this challenge in the past, but taken off a few years, so have decided to return to the fun. Read 1 book that fits the motif for that month. Simple, right? The chart above lists the motifs. I’ll pick as I go along.
